About Me
Meet Your Trainer
My name is David Culley and I have a passion for professional education and development!
I’ve developed this passion over two decades as a trainer and author in accountancy, business and technology. This training is complemented by my professional fellowships of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and the Institute of Leadership, as well as an extensive career in industry as a strategic business leader.
Through my company, Adept Training Ltd, I specialise in training accountants and finance professionals, although I find that my courses are equally valuable to businesspeople outside the world of accountancy.

I never thought I'd become an accountant...

As I neared the end of my Law and Human Resource Management degree, a careers adviser suggested I became an accountant.
I walked out of the room in disgust. After all, I thought, why would anybody want to be a bean-counter?
After graduating in 1996, I managed a project for New Look to assess the performance of its new shops across Europe. I really enjoyed gathering information about the business and analysing it to direct the company's future strategy.
It took me a year to realise that the work I was enjoying so much was actually accountancy.
In 1998, I joined the John Lewis Partnership Finance Graduate Training Scheme, during which time I worked on new stores in Southampton and Solihull. I also qualified with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
After several happy years with the Partnership, I relocated to Bristol and built a career in finance, working for small start-ups and major multinationals. Although I enjoyed being a business leader, I had a strong desire to teach and, in 2006, I joined BPP to train students for their professional accountancy qualifications.
“One of the best training courses I’ve been on in over 15 years in the industry. David was incredibly enthusiastic and knowledgeable, very engaging, happy to answer off-topicquestions, and kept the material at a good pace.”

A passion for teaching...
As a tutor at BPP, I quickly built up a diverse portfolio of courses in business strategy and management, financial management, management accounting and law.
Alongside my teaching, I became a Subject Matter Expert and created the content used in BPP’s classrooms globally. My materials generated excellent pass rates, and I was invited twice to CIMA's Head Office to advise students how to turn a particularly challenging paper 'from a stumbling block to a stepping stone'.
As time went on, I took on strategic roles at BPP, managing a team of 30 Subject Matter Experts and becoming Interim Managing Director of BPP Learning Media.
Although I enjoyed my time at BPP, I felt myself drifting away from the teaching work I found so fulfilling. In January 2018, I left BPP and set up my own company, Adept Training Ltd.

“David was brilliant, enthusiastic and concise. He covered all the points we requested. He was articulate and brought a great energy to the day.”
Adept by name...
The great thing about running your own company is that you set your own objectives, and Adept’s objective is simply to enable me to teach!
I still train students for their professional qualifications and I’ve glimpsed life 'on the other side' as an examiner for two institute exams in strategic leadership.
As well as training the accountants of tomorrow, I also support the accountants and finance professionals of today with their continuing professional development. The practical, interactive nature of my courses makes them equally popular with non-finance businesspeople who want to explore Artificial Intelligence, business strategy and finance.
